Ministry
of Petroleum & Natural Gas Ministry of Petroleum &
Natural Gas deals with exploration and production of oil and gas (including import
of Liquefied Natural Gas), refining, distribution & Marketing, import, export
and conservation of petroleum products. The allocated work includes exploration
for petroleum resources including Natural Gas and Coal Bed Methane and their production,
refining, supply, distribution, marketing and pricing. The institutional infrastructure
of the Ministry includes a Petroleum & Natural Gas Regulatory Board, Oil Industry
Development Board, Petroleum Conservation Research Association, Oil Industry Safety
Directorate, Centre for High Technology and Directorate General of Hydrocarbons.
The companies under the administrative
control of the Ministry include Fortune-500 companies such as Oil and Natural
Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC), Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Hindustan
Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited
(BPCL) and other major companies such as Gas Authority of India (GAIL), Oil India
Limited (OIL) and Engineers India Limited (EIL). To
achieve the goal of Energy Security, there is a massive programme of exploration,
not only in India through the New Exploration Licensing Policy, but also abroad
through various public sector companies, in particular, ONGC-Videsh Limited and
the consortium of Oil India Limited Indian Oil Corporation Limited. The specific
interests being pursued abroad are equity participation in developed oil and gas
fields, exploration and production contracts in new fields, both oil and natural
gas, participation in mid-stream and downstream projects and participation in
transnational oil and gas pipeline projects. Shri
